New image in portfolio. Based on Ribofunk slogan Gregor Mendel died for your sins I made this illo. Ribofunk is a new science-fiction subgenre (whose first publication is… er, well Ribofunk by Paul Di Filippo), I hear about it last year and since Im reading some short stories and comics (Fluorescent Black!).

Ok, this silly guy dont look like a hero as suggest the post´s title. I start this… mmh, not fucking sure, maybe one year ago (or more) and since Im inking a lot of lines from my sketchbook I finish it at last! I try a real version of an old 2005 digital illustration homework… oh, the silly and old farts Visual Arts School days!!

First, just some colors. Yeah, he could be a little pervert bastard.

New website header. Not much to say, Im close to finish more illustrations from my sketchbook. After that, wait for some graphic interventions. Original lineart…

Three weeks ago I make a fast trip to a local comic/manga/anime/cosplay event just because they use my illustration as promotional image in a lot of places including a big advertisment in a bridge. How cool is that!?

One of the most successful mexican webcomics InkPawa! reach their first anniversary and her creators (Eva Cabrera and Bere Muñíz) celebrate with an art exhibition where several illustrators and comic book artists participate. Opening´s tomorrow and here´s my full Lina illustration ->

Kara (Black) is the main character in Benim Adım Kırmızı (My Name is Red) by Orhan Pamuk. This is just my first attempt to make a full illustration based in Pamuk´s book, that is my current favorite book. At the same time is part of the development for another idea influenced by turkish culture and pirates.

My Name is Red was my first novel by Orhan Pamuk (who was recommended to me by my dad), since then, I have read two books by the same author (Snow and The New Life), but My Name is Red is still my favorite.

My first image for SketchMatch. I make this faster than my average time but still not enough from my point of view. Im not a huge Hulk fan, in fact must be very hard to write stories about him (same for Wonder Woman and Aquaman) but is a cool character to draw. Full view and original draw ->

Se ha publicado mi colaboración para InkPawa!, una tira protagonizada por el Chino (pueden verla dando click en la imagen de arriba), personaje secundario del cada vez más célebre webcomic. Creo que la tira se puede entender sin problemas siempre y cuando hayas leído algo del material anterior, sin embargo hay varios detalles que quisiera comentar relativos al arte y textos del trabajo solo como anotaciones:

1.- El título Little Chino in Dreamland viene de Little Nemo in Slumberland, la célebre tira cómica creada a principios del siglo pasado por Winsor McCay.

2.- La apariencia del Chino está basada en The Yellow Kid de Richard F. Outcault (personaje de una tira cómica que incluso antecede a Little Nemo) quien es, de hecho, la mas pura encarnación del estereotipo asiático.

3.- La palabra frikifreak ha sido designada (al menos entre el círculo que frecuento) desde hace años para referirse a alguien que sobrepasa cualquier borde de frikismo fundamentalista.

4.- En el background de los paneles superiores podemos ver que el sol es una versión un poco extraña del logo y la lata de DrinkPawa! ¿coincidencia?

5.- Final Crisis ha sido el mejor semillero de ideas que he leído en años, a mí me ha gustado por eso aunque reconozco que no es una historia redonda. Si la tira la califica como una mierda no significa que yo lo crea. Es eso o el lavado de cerebro ha empezado a funcionar en mí.

6.- Esos círculos negros en medio de los paneles superiores son Kirbydots! Si te consideras un fan de los cómics sería una vergüenza que no sepas que son los Kirbydots!

7.- La cabeza que sale del suelo es Grant Morrison… o King Mob… o ambos.

8.- El diálogo entre los paneles inferiores está así a propósito como referencia a los ilegibles textos que usan las traducciones de los mangas. Como me reputean esos textos.

9.- Las barbas de Moore son las de Alan Moore, las barbas mas conocidas del medio comiquero.

10.- En el penúltimo panel, las pesadillas hacen referencia a los protagonistas de las dos tiras anteriores a la mía que fueron realizadas por mis compañeros y amigos Jorge Cavazos y Jesús Aburto.

11.- Esto no se ve porque resulto salir demasiado pequeño pero en ese mismo penúltimo panel la camiseta del Chino y las latas a su derecha traen el logo de DrinkPawa!

12.- En el último panel aparecen Bob Shigella y Grant Morrison… ¿conspirando?

13.- Por cierto, la gorra de Bob es similar a la que usa (en su trabajo) otro Bob, aquel que vive en una piña debajo del mar.
